Description: African-American popular music and culture from the mid-1930s through the early 1960s, including styles such as blues, R 'n' B, and early Rock 'n' Roll. Considers issues of racial and gendered representation, creativity, the popular music industry, the place of music in the development of 'youth culture' and stylistic trends. Individual performers, recordings and performances, are also examined.
